Building balsa wood aircraft models?
I didn't know were to ask this but this section seems appropriate, anyway I want to start getting into building model planes and power them using electric(I have nitro powered models and are very messy). But thing is I never built a model before so could u guys tell me how do I calculate scales like 1:32 and 1:18? The model kit is of a supermarine spitfire and it comes in either 1:32 or 1:18 but I dont know which is bigger and what wingspan it will be?
The larger the second number the smaller the model will be. 1:18 means the model will be 1 /18th as big as of he original, 1 : 32 means the model will be 1 : 32nd the size of the original. To get the actual size of the model or any part of it divide the size of the original by the second number. Of course you have to divide the part in every length, height, width and sometimes diagonals.
THe earlier Spitfires wingspans were 36' 10" (latest models varied) so at 1 : 18 you just dived it by 18 to get the size of wingspan in your model. It is a bit over 2 feet in wingspan.
You will need a working space of at least twice that to be able to work comfortably. And space to put the bolse wood to dry and cure while your work space is open for other steps.
