Is there anyway to boost the reception strength of an indoor digital antenna?
I thought the switch to digital would give me more channels. Instead, there are some channels that have clear reception and some that are terribly poor. Any thoughts on good indoor digital antenna brands or ways to boost my existing antennas which are; the SDV2730/27 16dB Amplified Digital Indoor TV Antenna and the Phillips Passive Digital indoor TV antenna?
The digital TV signals are transmitted at a different frequency, which may result in a different radiation pattern from the transmitter. As such, you may find that some of the digital TV signals don't come in as well as their analog counterparts did.
The digital TV signal is an RF carrier that has been modulated with a digital bit stream that represents the digital TV signal. So, you can use a standard RF amplifier to boost the signal from the antenna to your TV.
However, the amplifier should be as close to the antenna as possible to really be effective. A TV tuner requires both a certain signal level and a certain signal-to-noise ratio to produce a clear picture. Noise is the background white noise floor that's caused by the spurrious discharge of electrons in the conductors and amplifier components. And, if you amplify a signal with a lot of noise in it, you amplify the noise as well and this won't improve your picture. That's why you need to amplify the signal right out of the antenna, because this is where the signal to noise ratio would be the greatest along the transmission line.
But, if you're using an indoor antenna, the transmission line length isn't going to be significant and having an amplified model may not produce any improvement. The best thing to to would be to try one that you can take back if it doesn't improve your reception. And, consider placing the antenna somewhere else besides the location of the TV that would give you better reception, and then run the cable back to your TV set.
