I couldn't believe my ears. The Chief had just informed me that my vacation to catch a few races at Pimlico wasn't gonna happen after all. I guess I seemed distant because he asked if I heard him - that the victim was an old friend that I hadn't seen in years. I replied that, "Yeah, I heard that part." That's when I knew I was gonna make other plans. It was just as well - I wasn't really looking forward to going to the horses, but excitement in my life now-a-days is dinner without heartburn. It's a far cry from my youthful years - with all the experimentation and waking up in places and with people that were utterly strange to me. The last straw was when I tripped out on some laced rock - I only remember that it was terrifying .... about the only thing my mind will allow me to recall is the 5 toy soldiers, 21 airplanes, and 12 spinning midgets that swirled around me in a blurry flux -- endless blobs of bright, waxy swirls. The blaring sounds of strange musical notes and voices.
I'm doing as well as can be expected now ... in fact, aside from food poisoning, I'm just fine, thank you but, unfortunately, I couldn't manage to shake my past - the dawns waking up in gutters and back alleys. The Chief knows I can tackle the toughest cases but even HE can't seem to let me or people like me get over our past. In fact according to his system, I think we're probably classified as scum.
I hung up with the Chief ... trying without much success to summon the energy to get out of bed ... I grabbed the remote -- my head hanging over the side of the bed and mindlessly changed channels ... hearing only a collage of dialogue .... "Hee Haw baby........I LOVE YOU !" ... soap operas and old movies ... and why the hell was "It's a Wonderful Life" showing in mid July. I hate my life ... I hope there's beer in the fridge.
