The strengths is that you get a very accurate picture of a Lewis structure that you would get on paper.
Using a model you would see double, triple bonds, and single bonds. In the model you also see the bond angles, and a roughly accurate model of the bond lengths.
The limitation is that you don't see any lone pairs with the model(some models give you something to represent an sp,sp2,or sp3 orbital in which the lone pairs exist). Another limitation is that the models, as stated before, are models for the Lewis structures and sometimes molecules like CO have more than one Lewis structure. These different structures are called resonance structures.
One structure for CO is..... C(triple bond)O and placing a lone pair on C and a lone pair on O.
This strucure would have a negative charge on C and a positive on O. If you made a model of CO like this you wouldn't necessarily know those charges existed.
